Content caching is where video content is downloaded to the device to avoid continuously using data.
How It Works
- As soon as a channel starts playing, it will download the videos in the background while it is streaming.
- Whenever a segment is about to play, the app checks to see if that video is cached locally. If it is, it uses that video instead of streaming.
- One channel takes up about 5GB of storage which is about 1 GB per hour of content.
How quickly content is cached depends completely on the internet speed.
Daily Data Consumption
*These download times are based on 5 GB of video content and a persistent network connection. Content caching is available on Atmosphere TV provided devices only. Advertisements are not cached.
Playback Quality
Atmosphere TV videos are encoded at 720p and 1080p resolutions to ensure the highest quality of content.
Videos begin playing at a resolution of 720p while the app checks for any network issues that may affect the ability to play at 1080p. If bandwidth allows, the device will automatically switch to a higher quality for a better viewing experience.
Buffering and Network Connectivity
Managing fluctuating network connectivity can be a challenge. To ensure an optimal playback experience, we have implemented several measures to mitigate potential performance issues.
- If a device has to buffer a video for more than 3 seconds, we show a loading spinner.
- If a segment is buffering longer than 15 seconds, we skip to the next segment in the loop.
